We once had some blank bevels and I was in search of subject matter to sand-blast into them. Hmmm, some little compact sprig of a plant? Aha! The herb panels were born. For a long time we made chives, sage and basil, then someone wanted four and we added rosemary.
But the pinnacle of the herbal phase was a commission from the Wisconsin Herb Society for a large panel at Boerner Botanical Garden in Milwaukee. Thus commenced a serious study of herbs. They supplied me with a list of “must haves” and “would likes” and I proceeded. Of course I threw in a few insects just for fun. On the big panel, the names are given in both Latin and English and the 6x6’s are still accompanied by insects and nomenclature.
Presently one of our best selling pieces is the quad” Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. I think it’s a subliminal reminder of the lovely “Mrs. Robinson” and the innocence of the Simon and Garfunkle era. |
