During the Fall of 2001, we were approached by representatives of the Illinois Orchid Society with an interesting proposition. One of their members had seen our floral etchings at an art fair and thought we might be the ones to create the awards for their 50th Anniversary Show. The project involved designing thirty different awards, which depicted many different species.
It was a daunting prospect since at that time we didn’t know a “phrag” from a “phal”. But they brought us many books, magazines, and live plants to use as models. For three months we took a kind of orchid crash course. Each drawing had to be approved by a member. Many faxes and emails later, the process was completed in time for the show, which was held in March of 2002.
Since that time, we have made awards for several other societies, amongst them Denver, Sacramento, Nashville and most recently the Orchid Society of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

While none of these other commissions matched in scope that first one from Illinois, we have learned something from each of them. And since the variety of orchids is stupefying we would be happy to learn more.
